Former Deputy Prime Minister.
John Anderson is a former Australian politician. He served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Australia and Leader of the National Party of Australia from July 1999 to July 2005.
When Mr Anderson retired, members from all sides of politics praised his personal qualities and integrity. John Howard has said "There is no finer human being in public life than John Anderson".
After the tragic accidental death of his sister when John Anderson was 14-years of age he became a Christian and in a 2006 interview with Andrew Denton described his reason for faith as "I'm a believer because
I believe it's the truth, but also because I personally couldn't live with the alternative - an empty, meaningless, purposeless life.
John Anderson married Julia and they had five children. However, their last child Andrew was born with health problems and died at six months of age. Dealing with their sons health problems taught
them a lot about their own selfishness, something Mr Anderson sees as the biggest problems human beings and the world face today - the desire to look after ourselves.
Last year Mr Anderson was named an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to the Parliament of Australia,
particularly through support of rural and regional communities, transport development, and water management initiatives.
John Anderson spends his days on his property in northern New South Wales and attends a local Anglican church.
